Configure AI services
Roleplay always needs a DSH language-model route. Other AI capabilities are optional and detected at runtime.
| Capability | Used for | Without it |
|---|---|---|
| Language model | GM, characters, record keeper, authoring and summaries | A session cannot play |
| Embeddings | Semantic memory, lore and image search | Word and explicit-cue search still works |
| Reranking | Refines retrieved memories | Retrieval scores are used directly |
| Image generation | Portraits and scene illustrations | Image controls report that no provider is selected |
| Text-to-speech | Narration and character voices | Play controls are unavailable or fail clearly |
| Speech-to-text | Recorded or live player input | The user types normally |
Install and configure providers through DSH AI Providers. Select services under Settings → AI Providers, and configure language-model routes for DSH.
For local inference, describe shared GPU or server limits in the AI Providers concurrency settings. Player-facing calls receive foreground priority; indexing and similar maintenance work use background priority.
Model guidance
- The GM benefits from strong instruction following and tool use.
- Character agents can use a faster model if the selected DSH setup supports routing them separately.
- Image interpretation requires a model declared as accepting image input.
- Provider model metadata should include its context window; automatic context limits depend on it.
Capability failures do not corrupt the story. Optional background work is retried or omitted, while required turn operations fail visibly.
